DEAREST PUGFACE

From the archives of the Hallmark Greeting Card Company, finally released under the Freedom Of Information Act: here is a rejected internal from Hallmark's short-lived and controversial Ultra-Specifics Card Range:

21st BIRTHDAY CARD FOR A WOMAN WITH EXCESS FACIAL SKIN
Dearest Pugface, grown-up now
But it seems only weeks
Though time is a burden
Like your neck and your cheeks

Clock

She stands watching, marking a minuet to time's music. Lighthouse for his daily tempest. She strikes 28 and winds back to the beginning of the cycle shifting the burden of weeks from her shoulders
Dearest friend and gaoler.

Pugmill stirs.
Her hands and face are dear to him
She stood over his birth, his mother's wake, counting the breaths and the stillness.

Pugmill had grown tall and could face it now. Imagined he could hear a weariness in her hum and whir, but she would survive him.

In this solitary place any pulse is company. Skinned in dark timbers
He imagined her stepping out
Shaking her head and laughing
But she waited still
Counting his measure
Calling his bluff.
