INCURSIONS

A siege, I know, is something else pursued—
A battle fall, a hostage at an end.
But what is this, if not a hopeless cause?
The personal: that castle often breached.

The structure of a self is one at odds:
Too brittle for attack and yet too thick.
The simple poison of a misheard word
is more effective than the strongest gun.
